Eating Banh Cuon in the Old Quarter, Hanoi
Hi, I'm Dave from the UK. In April 2025 at the age of 61 I made probably the biggest decision of my life, I decided to take early retirement and move abroad. This site and Blogs are here to help you, what you need to consider if you wish to take that big leap and follow in my steps.
I had been working for the last 7 years as a self employed table tennis coach, after being made redundant from the local authority after 20 years service. I was also Chair of a full time table tennis club in Hull, England, open 7 days a week that kept me very busy and occupied too.
I had visited Vietnam 3 times previously for holidays and loved the place, the people, food, the sites etc.
After my 5 week holiday in the summer of 2024 , 3 weeks in Vietnam, a week in Cambodia and a week in Thailand I didnt really want to go back home and I started to ask the question - could I afford to retire early and move abroad? It was then I started to research as much as I could all about taking that big leap.
I suppose it was easier for me because I was young, free and single..........ok maybe not so young.
I was waiting an eye operation, cornea transplant in my left eye, and at the time didn't know when that would be so this had to come into my planning too. But I started slowly to put the pieces in place ready for the big move, subject to a successful eye operation.
Eye operation took place January 2025 in Hull and by all accounts went very well and so basically that was the final green light, Vietnam here I come.
I decided to create this site and blogs to prove to others its possible and all the things you need to get in place for it to work. If I can do it i'm sure you can too.
I am now happily retired and living in Hanoi, Vietnam.

DALK Cornea transplant completed January 2025. Realistically that was the last piece of the jigsaw, full steam ahead now with Operation Hanoi.
All packed. Hanoi, Vietnam next stop.
Last night in Hull. Everything, including my bed sold, giving away or taken to tip.
House looks empty just before I leave
